The NHL Final Four Teams Are Ready
It’s been a long layoff but the Eastern and Western Conference Finals are ready to start, and what a long road it’s been. Again, we are at the 50/50 mark in predicting the winners in their respective series and I have to say the two we got wrong were purely upsets by teams that playing as good of hockey as they have all year. The Flyers were the biggest surprise from the previous round as they knocked out the top seed Montreal Canadiens despite being outshot in all but one game, but it was the overall team chemistry that did it for the Flyers by getting All-Star performances by R.J. Umberger and Randy Jones. Will they be good enough to take off the hottest team in hockey, the Pittsburgh Penguins? Who knows but if you are a Flyers fan you will probably like our prediction since we are bound to get at least one of these series wrong.
We are going to start off in the Eastern Conference where the Philadelphia Flyers take on Sidney Crosby and the Pittsburgh Penguins. As stated, the Flyers took care of the number one seed Montreal Canadiens in five games which means they took care of the number 1 and number 3 seeded teams; do they have enough to drop off the number 2 seed? The Flyers have been able to handle Alexander Ovechkin in the first round and they maintained the speedy Montreal Canadiens in round two, but to get to the Stanley Cup Finals they will need to shut down Sidney Crosby; Evgeni Malkin and Marian Hossa at even strength which seems daunting in itself, but it’s on the power play that they are very deadly. The all Pennsylvania series starts up on Friday evening and we are thinking this game will go all seven games the will end in Pittsburgh which will be fitting as the Penguins will be skating towards the Stanley Cup Finals.
The Western Conference Finals will be the most lopsided of the two series, let’s face it Detroit is a machine running on all cylinders right now. Chris Osgood has really stepped up his game by replacing former All-Star Dominik Hasek and since the move; the Detroit Red Wings have been on cruise control. Detroit outscored the Colorado Avalanche 21-9 in their series and we honestly think that trend in scoring will continue against Dallas as Detroit will win the first two games and split in Dallas and then finally ending the series in five games.
Going off past performances we feel confident that at least one of these teams will be playing for the Stanley Cup, but who it is will be an entirely different conversation for another day.
